My betta won't touch his food?
Hi guys,
I have a new male betta who won't eat his food. I first gave him TetraBetta floating mini pellets. He tried them, but spit them out; they seemed too hard for him to eat. I tried soaking them, and/or breaking them into smaller pieces...no go. So I got him some BettaMin flakes, but he won't touch those either. What do I do? The only thing he'll eat are the freeze-dried blood worms, and that's not a balanced diet for him. He's very healthy looking; active, with beautiful, shimmering fins.
Does anyone have ideas for picky bettas?

Kitti is right. He may also just be a very picky eater, which bettas are notorious for. Playing w/his food can help him get interested enough to eat it. Drag his food along the surface w/a toothpick, waterlog it so it sinks, etc. Often this is enough to pique his attention & he'll try it though even this sometimes takes a few days. You want to remove any uneatee food after a few min. or it will foul the water by increasing the ammonia level which will harm him since ammonia is toxic to him. The easiest way to do this is w/a clean turkey baster.
Taste could also be the issue w/his not eating. Flakes, pellets & freeze dried food & have lots of filler that bettas can't digest, can cause bloating problem in sensitive & old bettas, are the least nutritious & also supposedly the least tasty. If you can get it, live food is best, as it's similar to what he'd eat in the wild & they often like to "hunt" it & frozen food is also very good: PetSmart/Petco sell it-brine shrimp, bloodworms, glassworms, etc. for $4-5/bubble pack of food. If you feed pellets, soak them in water prior to feeding, otherwise they'll expand in his stomach when they come into contact with his digestive juices which can cause bloating.
Whatever you feed his stomach is only the size of his eye, so 3-4 pieces of any food, 1x/day is plenty. Also, you want to fast him 1 day/wk.
There are also non-food factors that affect his appetite, so make sure you have the following:
1) Bettas are tropical fish & need heater & a steady water temp. of 78 degrees. Even small temperature changes can stress & sicken them. Cooler temperatures cause stress, poor digestion, color loss, clamped fins, illness, lethargy, loss of appetite &/or death. Depending on the tank size he needs: 1-gallon (7.5 or 10 watt heater @ PetSmart and PetCo), 2.5-3 gallons: 25 watt heater (@ most pet stores), 5 gallons: 50 watt heater (@ most pet stores).
2) Water changes remove ammonia, which is toxic & forms in water from uneaten food, waste, his breathing. It's colorless & odorless so you can't tell if the water's ok by seeing if it "looks clean." For uncycled 100% water change tanks: 1 gallon: change 100% of the water (& rinse off plants, gravel, take the fish out, etc.) every other day; 2.5-3 gallons 2-3 times/week; 5 gallons 1-2 x's/week. Many people say not to change all the water but w/uncycled tanks you MUST; otherwise the ammonia levels, which are toxic, continually rise since you're leaving some in w/every water change. Because of the this, the % of ammonia in the water also rises each time. Any Ammonia can stress, sicken or kill fish, so none is the only ok amount. If it's a cycled tank, change 10-25% of the water (exact amount is determined by your tank's water test kit results) & vacuum 1/3 of the gravel 1x/week.
Check Craigslist, freecycle,com, Ebay, backpage.com or online fish forums for the above items; people usually sell tanks &/or equipment cheaply or give them away.
