I tried putting a coat of clear nail polish on it and it just made the sharpie smudge. How can I draw a design on it without having it look crappy?
You do not want to use Sharpie type ink and fingernail polish together because their chemistry is interactive. What you do want to use is a combination of black enamel latex paint and a latex polyurethane.
My suggestion is that you apply a coat of poly, then the paint, and when it is completely dry, another few thin coats of polyurethane.
You can easily purchase both products at any store that sells paint.
