How Lanyards and Card Holders are Just Some of the ID Card Accessories by Sarah Shore
It is understandable that only lanyards and card holders are considered when ID cards are being distributed amongst personnel. After all, it seems that is all that is necessary. However, there actually is a wide range of accessories available, all of which are designed to make the process of identification as simple and quick as possible. While it is certainly possible to get unbranded, cheap lanyards that serve any purpose, there are also different methods of holding and presenting cards. For some companies, the process of making photo ID cards involves more basic tools than software, making photo cutters, for example, necessary to have. We have put together a short list of some of those available, though there are many more. Wallets and Pockets Card holders are not the only way to protect an ID card, with soft PVC wallets and clear view pockets also available. The wallets are designed in landscape or portrait form, and in several different sizes so there is always the right wallet for even a larger than usual card. Pockets, meanwhile, are even more versatile, with special armband pockets designed to strap onto the upper arm of the bearer. Pockets are also available to stick on the inside of windscreens, something commonly used to display insurance badges but can be used to display security passes for entry into a company car park. Card Clips Instead of hanging an ID card around the neck with a lanyard, the cards can be simply clipped to a pocket or lapel with one of the multitude of clip designs. Probably the most common is the chrome flip top clip, but other forms include the magnetic card holder, the pressure sensitive brooch pin. Another option is the bead chain, which is available in plastic or metal. These are a straight swap with the lanyard. Badge Reels Being able to gain easy access to an ID card is not always practical. It can get quite tiresome having to raise a card to card readers to gain entry. But the development of the badge reel has changed that. Now, with the badge reel connected to the trousers or jeans of the barer, the yoyo design allows for the ID be to be pulled up to a card reader, then pulled automatically back to the badge reel unit. Of course, the major plus is that the ID card is highly unlikely to be lost. Wristbands A very simple accessory, wristbands are available in a range of bright colours, each one matching the ID card colour. This actually provides an easy to see identification process, negating the need to show an ID card, and making it ideal for use in situations where time is of the essence. Perhaps, that is why they are most commonly used at events, like concerts and festivals, where a large amount of people are but where only a small number are entitled to enter restricted areas. So, when security personnel need to admit or turn away people quickly, the colour of the wristband worn by the revellers can be spotted easily. UV lights There is always the risk of fake ID cards being used to gain illegal entry into an area. The problem with them is that they can sometimes look perfectly fine to the naked eye, particularly if the official ID and pass cards have only very simple security features. But the problem can be easily dealt with thanks to UV lights and the use of UV pens. UV lights are commonly available in small, easy to hold designs, though it is also possible to get them as key rings. If the official IDs are marked with the pen, which can only be seen under UV light, then unofficial cards are easily discovered. There are many more accessories available too, making lanwards and card holders just a small part of the total number available. They include card readers, which are of course necessary to read the magnetic stripe on the back of card, but also include less technical items. For example, polaroid photo cutters for use when photo ID cards are being made in-house, and the images need to be cut quickly to the particular required size, and cheap lanyards that are not branded and can be used for general purposes.
