Black residue from vintage suede?
Does anyone know what the black residue is that rubs off vintage suede clothing & purses? It's worse than dirt - it's like crumbly shoe polish or something - and it's hard to remove from skin & other clothing that it rubs off onto.
It is the nap disintegrating, and it is hard to stop. Generally speaking, suede like leather was once the hide of a living animal and once removed it dries out over time. Leather which is smooth without a nap is fairly easy to keep moisturized, flexible and nourished so that the hide does not dry out, crack or flake. Suede on the other hand is difficult to keep moisturized because of the nap. Sometimes, you can treat the opposite side if a purse isn't lined and the leather is finished. And, some suede cleaners contain moisturizers and finishing solutions that must be used rather regularly to control the suede's natural shedding of nap.
You can attempt to control the loss of nap yourself by using a suede brush or soft nail brush to agitate it off of the shedding suede surface. That being said, it is not without risk because I have done it on 50 year old suede and basically turned it into distressed leather.
