Ancient water mill ---- A resume of the rebuilding of a self catering holiday cottage in rural Fra by Tomandjoan
We have here a chronicle of a medieval watermill which now is a holiday retreat deep in the French countryside. Here we have one of a number of items relating the story of and detailing the surroundings of Le Moulin de Pont de Chez Lord, France 23430.
When the water mill was built the Limousin area of central France was ruled by English soldiery. The mill was built in around the year 1271 and the regional commander of the garrison lived in a dwelling alongside the bridge over the river Beraude. As he was a member of the British gentry the bridge became known as Le Pont de Chez Lord which means literally ---- The Bridge of the House of the Lord.
Le Moulin de Chez Lord (which translates as The Mill by the House of the Lord) was constructed close to the residence of the English milord. It was required to prepare the flour to make bread to feed the soldiery and also to prepare the oats for the horses. It is easy to forget that the humble spud was not known in France until very roughly 1450. Thus the building of the water mill was long before the introduction into Europe of the spud and bread was the main source of carbohydrate. The Moulin was running for 300 years before the potato was imported from Peru and eventually became a staple part of the English diet. This is why for any permanent occupying force it was obligatory to have a trustworthy source of flour.
To get the time when the water mill was built into perspective we should explain that we are talking about the thirteenth century, the time of Richard the Lionheart, who became King of England and Aquitaine the other side of Bordeaux in 1189. So the mill was constructed in the period of the crusaders and Robin Hood in England. The involvement of King Richard and his involvement locally will be discussed in another article.
In western Europe it was the time of the start to The Little Ice Age. The river in London froze over in some winters and the Scandinavians withdraw from their outposts in Iceland as the ice cap crept south. Our sun was less hot and the planet was plunged into this Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries ending in the mid 1850s. Crops regularly failed throughout this time ... so much for NOW being a time of specific weather change. Here in France the temperature was some 2 degrees below the current average so here at the watermill in winter it was worse and no doubt wetter than now which gives me sympathy for former owners.
The water mill was still in use until the 1980s when it milled cow meal. The mill has now been changed into a holiday cottage in this region of France called the Limousin.
Now going towards the East you come to the Massive Central which is a mountainous area well known for winter sports. Turning now towards the west a short journey brings one to Limoges, renowned for its porcelain manufacture and going further still the coastal town of La Rochelle the largest fishing center in the Bay of Biscay. This fascinating city has become also a holiday resort and a major center for yachting.
This region called the Limousin is a new one on the tourist map as it was for many years a mainly French holiday area however it has now become popular with foreign tourists. It is a district of woodland, hills and valleys with lots of charming hamlets nestled in the hillsides. The region contains thousands of rivers in the many valleys which results in exceptional views.
Most open-air sports are readily available. Particularly interesting among these are the wonderful hikes of every rank of effort so appealing to capabilities and degrees of enthusiasm.
The ancient mill is 700 years of age, and was constructed to grind flour for English forces who were stationed in this part of France to maintain the British wine interests centered around Bordeaux. The mill is hidden in a valley and includes 20 acres of meadows and woods. It is down a 300 meter road which means more tranquility.
The river Beraude and the mill stream almost surround the mill and only steps from the front door is a cascade which was the overspill for the mill pool. The river runs across the garden and encloses a tiny island with a few of pine trees that is just right for relaxing beneath on those very hot days as it always has a wind off the river. Our friends also frequently have parties and barbecues there on warm summer evenings.
The old granary of the watermill is now transformed into two double bedrooms with integral bathrooms and the workings on the lower level into a functional area. There is a shady terrace by a cascade which is perfect for outside eating or for enjoying a bottle of wine on warm days.
Because we are lucky enough to live in the center of this most interesting area and in the beautiful countryside, we would like in the future to give you stories in which we will further look at the region and depict the abundant features of the department.

Limoges is not a single factory but actually a region where fine china was a traditional product.
It has a very good reputation as a not much faked geneuine antique.
If you did not make it clear that it was the 'new' tableware rather than the antique porcelain, you might look a bit of a poser.
As for how 'good' it is, it's certainly pricey enough to be reasonable quality.
