There are many brands and types of polymer clay
available, each with its own unique set of
strengths and weaknesses. When choosing material
the number of options may seem a little

Well, let's make it easier. While each project
and crafter is different, your choice really
comes down to two things; strength and color.
Strength
Now choosing your project will be the first step
in pointing you towards the right kind of clay.
If you are making beads or covering objects,
really any kind will do. In these projects the
clay is not providing the strength of the piece
so you have more flexibility.
However, if the clay has to provide the strength,
like a button, you really need to go with
something stronger. This way your piece will hold
up with use and time. If you really love the
softer clays but need the strength, try mixing
the two for certain pieces. This way you can get
the best of both worlds.
Color
Color will also depend on preference and will
vary by brand. Keep in mind that most colors will
darken slightly as they dry as this might give
your work a different look. Color is an area
where you can have a lot of fun. If you can't
find what you're looking for, mix it! Play with
mixing your clays to create custom tones unique
to your work. You can even create a marbled
effect by not mixing completely. The right mix of
colors can mimic natural stone like agate,
turquoise, or jade. You're the artist, have fun!

How do I clean a hair-dye stain off of my counter?
About a month ago, I spilled some brown hair dye on my bathroom countertop. I wiped it, but figured I'd wash it off later. Now, I can't seem to get the stain out. I've used clorox and scrubbed profusely, but it won't come out. Is there a trick or secret to it?
And it's not tiled, marbled, stone or porcelin countertop. It's some other cheap material.
Try an "Oxy-Clean" type product (generic from the dollar store works almost as well as the brand name) mixed into a paste and let to set over a couple of hours. Then hit it with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (the soft side so it won't scratch the material). Also try rubbing alcohol, which takes out many semi- to permant- stains. Hydrogen Pyroxide may also do it, though both could take off the finish to your counter. If that happens rub a little bee's wax (a seriously light layer) onto it to faux faux finish a matte top, or some clear nail polish to faux finish a shiny top. Best of Luck, this is a tough one.
