Creating Custom Jewelry for Weddings by Jen Olson
I recently created a custom made necklace and earring set for a bride and her bridesmaid back in May. I must say the sets turned out wonderfully! Although expensive and time consuming they were well worth the effort in the end. At first I found it difficult to come up with a suitable set of jewelry since I didn’t really have much to work with. I had no picture of a dress to go by, just a general description. After a couple tries and after seeing a picture of the dresses it was much easier to create something that was more appropriate for the occasion.
I made the necklace using purple and clear Swarovski crystals, purple flower glass beads, and glittery glass ball spacers. These beads were linked together using silver eye pins and jump rings. The main focal point of the necklace was a Swarovski crystal flower pendant in which I connected 4 points of the necklace onto the back. Hanging from this as a secondary point were yet more crystals and a silver butterfly charm.
The earrings were a simpler, yet still elegant design. They were made with the purple flower glass beads and cream colored rice pearls.
The theme of the wedding were butterflies and gardens as it was held in the bride’s backyard gardens and a butterfly release was done at the end of the ceremony which was just beautiful. The set fit perfect with the wedding and I got rave reviews for them.
One frustration I had came from using 24 gauge eye pins when I ran out of my basic supply. I ordered more from an online wholesale bead store and I saw the price which was very appealing. However, these eye pins are to be used with care! They are very fragile and break very easily. I think I broke about half the bag I ordered and as you can imagine was not very pleased. So unless you’re using them to link together pearls, which do not fit on most standard eye pins, stick to the larger scale ones.
Another bonus to the wedding was it was my boyfriend’s mother getting married so she was so kind enough to let me display the rest of my jewelry I had on hand for sale in the reception area. This turned out to be a great promotion for me as I sold quite a few things. This being my first real place of sale other than online I realized I need to start getting out into craft fairs more often as I think people tend to buy more what they can see rather than online where shipping can also be a downfall.
In conclusion if anyone would like for me to custom make any jewelry at all I am more than happy and open to custom orders!
