In the year 333 BC, a young man attempted to untie it and when he couldn't find the end of the knot, he sliced it in half. The name of that man was Alexander, but we would know him under his full name Alexander the Great. The solution he chose to unravel the knot was known from then on as the Alexandrian solution, which signifies choosing a bold stroke to solve an intractable problem.
Who was Alexander the Great? He was a Greek king, son of Philip II of Macedon, and could pride himself as being one, if not the most successful military commanders in all history. Before he died, he succeeded in conquering most of the world which the ancient Greeks knew.
Alexander lived up to the prophecy of the one who unravels the Gordian knot. He expanded his empire by conquering the Persian Empire, including Phoenicia, Anatolia, Syria, Judea, Egypt, Gaza, Bactria and Mesopotamia all the way to the Punjab.
There have been lots of disputes about the way Alexander provided the solution for the knot. There is also some significance attributed to the knot as a cipher signifying the name of Dionysus, guarded by priests and revealed to the kings of Phrygia.
