Sealed chests and doors?

How do you open the sealed chests/doors that you see throughout the game. I've looked at walkthroughs and they don't really fully explain how to do it.

Okay, now I follow. Much later in the game, the pendant gets charged up at something called the Mammon Machine. I don't want to give spoilers as it seems you've never played the game, but once you reach that point, your pendant will be charged. After this point, you're free to open the sealed chests and doors with your pendant.

I will give you a tip - if you activate a chest but don't open it in 600, you can find the same chest in 1000 with a better item, then go back to 600 and get the lesser item.
