Most "gems" are softer than you think...(not talking about sapphire here, but opal, emerald, amethyst, beryl, quartz, etc. are pretty soft. If you have an electric sander, use it as a sanding table, carefully hold stone and cut facets on it with sand paper...reduce the grit to finer and finer..by the time you hit 700 grit, the stone will be getting shiny. Now use metal polish (Wenol is a very fine grade polish)...and shine till brilliant...it works..lots of work, but it works.
