Danger of shells, corals... in coldwater tanks?
This advice was given by two aquatic centres but with little details: "Never put shells, corals or anything off the beach into your coldwater or tropical aquarium as this will cause problems in the future."
One mentioned PH issues...
Does anyone have more details of why this may cause a problem and is there any way around this(cleaning?)?

nope.. any calcium carbonate (shell-like material) will raise the pH and the hardness of the water in the tank.. most tropical and coldwater fish are intolerant of the levels they produce..
SW fish and african cichlids on the other hand need this hardness and pH
