Are four-seater sports cars as beautiful as their less practical cousins? by JeremyAllston

People seem to target the 4 seater sports car when they’re being forced to upgrade their roadsters because children have come along and ruined all your automotive fun. They’re what you look at intensely before the wife tells you you’re an idiot’ and makes you buy a people carrier or, if you’re lucky, a boxy SUV.

But are 4 seater sports cars as beautiful as we make them out to be? Sure, compared to a Toyota Previa they are absolutely gorgeous, but we should probably indulge in a slightly fairer comparison. Take the 911 and its bloated, slightly ignored cousin the Panamera. The interior is a delight; all quality plastics and fine trim, but all people see watching you drive it is you doing 150mph in a fat hamster. The Maserati Quattroporte got away with it for some reason, but there was still something that wasn’t quite right about it.

Of course, I’m rattling on about four-DOOR sports cars/coupes here, but the problem with two-door, four-seater sports cars is that the back seats might as well not be there, unless you’re fond of taking cats out for a drive with the missus.

One car on the market at the moment, which seems to be solving this seemingly, never ending issue, is Volvo of all people. The new C30 is a 4 seater sports car you can actually fit people in the back of. Sounds like something that shouldn’t be news, but I think it’s something that should be celebrated to the hilt.

It’s not terrible either, with a 2.0-litre 150bhp power unit that’s punchy enough for weekends away and trips round town and it won’t cost the Earth, either. And you can fit humans in the back.

Why can a small sports car negotiate a winding road easier than a larger car?

How are the ideas of Centripetal force and Circular motion evident in the fact that small sports cars can negotiate a winding road easier than a larger car?

The ideas of cent. force and circular motion as applied to a sports car vs. a larger car have to do with the tendency of either car to slide or rollover due to cent. acceleration which is applied by the road to the tires. Sliding resistance is primarily about tire friction, and not necessarily different for either car. What is more likely to be different is the rolling tendency, and as an earlier answer said, this is improved by a lower center of gravity. (Here I'm referring to rolling over, not just rotating about the longitudinal axis in a turn, which a stiffer suspension can remedy in either car.) But a higher cg is OK if the car is proportionately wider; it's actually the ratio of these measurements that is important, as the diagram of the sideways centripetal and inertial forces in the reference can show you.
