Take It Off âTake It âALLâ Off:
There are particularly important times that you should be in the habit of making sure that you always take your jewelry off, wipe it clean and be sure to safely store it away in an air-tight storage case of container. If all else fails, even a re-sealable baggie or freezer bag.

A good, active but gentle, âhand washâ is your safest bet. Do NOT use a washcloth on any piece of jewelry that has setting or additional attachments as it parts of the piece could be tangled into the cloth and pulled loose.
Remember, if you usually are in the habit of using a specially purchased âJeweler's Clothâ to keep your jewelry clean and shiny, be sure to always use a perfectly âfreshâ cloth each time you clean, because the dirt and grit left on the cloth from a previous cleaning will scratch, pit, scrape or leave unwanted residue on the piece that you are now trying to clean.
Never use toothpaste or other abrasive materials to clean metal or stones. While toothpaste is awesome for cleaning your teeth, it can severely damage the surface of precious metal and require the skilled refurbishment of a professional to buff and refinish the damaged piece.
Ultrasound / Ultrasonic Cleaning: This process may be OK for âSOMEâ jewelry, however, it can severely damage many gemstones and repeated usage can loosen the settings of many fine pieces of jewelry, meaning lost gems and broken dreams.
Avoid Chemicals: Especially acetone, ammonia, chlorine bleach, denatured alcohol and all forms of turpentine, as these chemicals can easily dull or even possibly pit the surface of some precious metals and softer gemstones. Many petroleum based products can actually "melt" or dissolve some portions of jewelry, so beware.
Rinse: Carefully take your jewelry out of the soapy water and place in another bowl to ensure its safety, then rinse the soapy water and any residue out of your washing bowl and refill the bowl with warm water for your piece to rinse in. Allow the jewelry to soak in the fresh water for a few minutes and then rinse it by hand and remove from the bowl to place on a soft cloth.
Dry: Itâs so very important that you dry your jewelry before putting it away in. Both gold and silver can tarnish very easily if left wet and water can leave residual water stains on most of your precious metals.
