I purchased two "obits" today at a flea market. They were tucked deep inside a Victorian photo album. Both are dated 1896 and are printed on cloth....which I have never seen before. I have tried researching online for any information about obituaries printed on fabric, but cannot seem to find any results. I can tell these are very old and not reprints. The fabric has a sheen to it. I am pretty familiar with obits/death notices that were printed for women in the late 1800's, and both are extremely informative for a female dying in that time frame and are quite long. Is anyone familiar with memoriam's being printed on fabric in the 1800's, or have a site with more info? Thanks
It was not a common practice, but one that was very costly and only the wealthy could afford.
There is one in my family. But I have only seem them in museums and as copies.
