It's hard to imagine Western kids coming up with the equivalent of the strange "funeral of Brezhnev" game that was played in the wake of the revered leader's death (yup, Hessman's got the home movies to prove it) or the Soviet habit of broadcasting "Swan Lake" whenever a historic event occurred, which is how Ruslan remembers being alerted to the Russian tanks rolling in during the failed coup of '91. Indeed, the specificity of My Perestroikaâ"from its upbeat score consisting of everything from traditional tunes to Russian hardcore, to its footage of the "mass healings" that sprung up after communism's fairytales were exposedâ"is what makes the film so riveting. As does Hessman's choice of not matching image to voiceover like when Borya expounds on his country's uncertain future while the camera lingers on his young son innocently playing at the family's dacha. Earlier on voting day Borya had sarcastically suggested, "Let's go vote for the American president." To which Lyuba replied, "No one is asking us." "Well, no one is asking us here either," her husband then reminded her. It seems that in Putin's Russia these wry history teachers and their comrades are still waiting for the truth to set them free.

When the USSR broke apart in 1991, a generation of young people faced a new realm of possibilities. Hessman's feature documentary debut tells the story of five Moscow schoolmates who went from sheltered Soviet childhoods through the hopes of Gorbachev's Glasnost (openness) and Perestroika (restructuring) to the chaos of the USSR's dissolution. Today, Borya and Lyuba are married history teachers; Olga is a single mother who works for a billiard table rental company; Ruslan, once a famous punk musician, now busks in the Moscow metro; and Andrei owns a thriving chain of menswear stores. With candor and humor, each paints a picture of the challenges, dreams and disillusionment they've faced in Russia's post-communist era.
Interweaving the contemporary world with vintage home movies and Soviet propaganda footage from the era, director Hessman, who spent years living in Moscow as a film student and later as a producer on the Russian Sesame Street, reveals a Russia rarely ever seen on film, where people are frank about their lives and forthcoming about their country. Engaging, funny and positively inspiring, in "My Perestroika" politics is personal, and history progresses one day, one life at a time.
MY PERESTROIKA is a Russian documentary that follows five individuals who came of age at the time of the break-up of the Soviet Union. The individuals reflect back on their school days and life under the Soviet regime and after the dissolution of the USSR. Borya and his wife are school teachers in Moscow #57. Their son attends this school and this is the school that Borya attended as a youth. We meet up with other classmates of Boryaâs; Ogla, Ruslan, and Andrei. Olga is an unmarried mom who is a billiards table service technician.
Ruslan is a musician; he does not have a steady job but works on the sly for cash only jobs. Andrei is a businessman who owns a western style clothing store; many of the jobs that he has held would not have been possible under the old Soviet system. The documentary shows the individualâs reminiscences through home movies. Each in their turn speaks about the differences in their life between the before and after of the Soviet Union. Borya and his wife took part in the demonstrations held in front of the White House in Moscow. It is very interesting to hear firsthand how the demonstrations actually were and how they impacted the outcome of the military coup and the subsequent break-up of the USSR.
MY PERESTROIKA is an interesting look into life of the Soviet Union verses Russia from the individualâs perspectives. I found the documentary interesting and well balanced. I thought that the use of old newsreels and home movies really illustrated the point that was being made throughout the narration. I found the narration of Borya, his wife, Andrei and Ruslan very interesting. Olga was a little less informative. .

How to take film pictures with Zenit 11?
I got this vintage USSR cam and i already now how to rewind and load the film, but when i press the release button, i can hear the snap sound, but it doesn't take pictures on my film, i wonder why.
please help! thank you 
I get this horrible feeling that you are taking the picture, opening the back and looking at the film. Please tell me this ain't so.
When you fire the shutter a very precisely measured but small amount of light is allowed through the lense and hopefully onto the film - assuming the shutter actually works. This is immediately self-evident if you give 10 seconds thought to what is happening. Should you have a 36 exposure film in the camera you will repeat this 36 times then rewind the film, only then do you open the back, take the cassette out and take it to a processor for developing and printing. If you open the back while the film is still in use then possibly 1000000 times too much light will hit the film - not just the frame you were on but all the film that is not stil in the cassette.
In a nutshell, film is sensitive to light - that is how it works.
